The action classics RICH AND FAMOUS, TRAGIC HERO and GOLGO 13 complete Eureka’s July 2023 line-up
Eureka! has announced its July 2023 line-up. Featured amongst this line-up are a 1973 action classic starring Ken Takakura as a deadly assassin; a crime saga of brothers caught up in a war between rival syndicates; plus the rescheduled Andrzej Żuławski: Three Films.
Almost impossible to see outside of Japan for many years, Golgo 13 was the first film adaptation of the long-running manga series by Takao Saito. Director Junya Satō cast Ken Takakura (who was the original inspiration for the character) as the mysterious and stoic killer-for-hire who always completes his assignment (usually with his signature scoped M16 rifle). Almost impossible to see outside of Japan for many years, Eureka Classics is proud to present Golgo 13 in its UK debut on home video in a definitive Blu-ray edition. Available from 17 July 2023, the first print run of 2000 copies will feature a Limited-Edition O-card Slipcase.
A two-film saga influenced by The Godfather and Once Upon a Time in America, Taylor Wong’s Rich and Famous and Tragic Hero tell a decades-spanning tale of brotherhood and betrayal with a heroic bloodshed twist. Stars Alex Man, Andy Lau, Chow Yun Fat and Danny Lee (who would reunite with Chow Yun Fat two years later for John Woo’s The Killer), Rich and Famous and Tragic Hero make their Blu-ray debuts in the UK from new restorations. Available from 24 July 2023, the first print run of 2000 copies will feature a Limited-Edition O-card Slipcase.
Last, but certainly not least. July sees the re-scheduled release of Andrzej Żuławski: Three Films. Whilst moving into the final stages of production before disc authoring, new video extras were submitted to Andrzej Jaroszewicz for his approval (Jaroszewicz worked as cinematographer on several Żuławski’s films and was a camera operator on The Devil). Upon reviewing footage from The Devil, Jaroszewicz expressed some concerns. The Devil was originally restored back in 2015 but was rejected by Żuławski as the colour grading was incorrectly applied. After Żuławski died in 2016, Daniel Bird made great efforts to have the film graded correctly, and Andrzej Jaroszewicz was brought in to oversee this new grading, which was completed that year. So, upon reviewing our extras, Jaroszewicz was surprised to see footage from The Devil that used the older incorrect grading. After contacting the licensor, it seems that at some point in the past 7 years the version of the film approved by Jaroszewicz has gone missing and the older version is all that is on file. After assessing the situation and raising the issue with the Polish Society of Cinematographers, the only solution was to go back to the original materials and re-do the grading, with Jaroszewicz again overseeing the project. As such, it will not be possible to make the originally planned release date. The rescheduled release date will now be 31 July 2023. The three films from the uncompromising visionary and a true maverick of European cinema will now be presented as a 3-Disc set rather than the previously announced 2-Disc set.
This month we are giving you the opportunity to buy the two newly announced releases for July at a discounted rate of £44 (Full price £47.98) when bought together in the same transaction from the Eureka Store
