An array of films across multiple genres is showcased as Eureka’s June 2025 line-up is revealed

Eureka! has revealed its highly anticipated June 2025 release schedule, showcasing an extraordinary array of films set to charm fans across multiple genres. The schedule features an East German cinematic masterpiece, two rare Shaw Brothers Studio revenge tales, and a riveting Hong Kong war drama starring Chow Yun-fat in one of his most powerful performances.

East German Folktale presented on Blu-ray from a stunning restoration

The first release highlights the legacy of DEFA, the iconic state-owned film studio of East Germany. In 1950, DEFA embarked on a bold journey by adapting classic folktales—from the works of Hans Christian Andersen to the Brothers Grimm—with German author Wilhelm Hauff’s “The Cold Heart” serving as the inspiration for the film Das kalte Herz (Heart of Stone). Notable for being the first East German production shot in colour, this whimsical yet darkly macabre fantasy captivated audiences and set a precedent for the studio’s subsequent folktale adaptations, including cult classics such as The Devil from Mill MountainThe Singing Ringing Tree, and Rumpelstiltskin. Now, The Masters of Cinema series is set to present Heart of Stone on Blu-ray in the UK for the first time from a pristine 2K restoration by the DEFA Foundation. This limited edition release, featuring an exclusive O-card slipcase and collector’s booklet, will hit shelves on 23 June 2025 in a run of only 2000 copies.

Shaw Brothers Studio’s underrated revenge epics return

Revenge has long been a cornerstone of Hong Kong cinema, and Shaw Brothers Studio was at the forefront of this tradition during the 1970s. Eureka! Classics is poised to reintroduce audiences to two of the studio’s most intriguing yet underrated revenge narratives: The Eunuch and The Deadly Knives (also known as Fists of Vengeance). These films, produced during the transition from traditional wuxia epics to the kung fu genre following Bruce Lee’s breakthrough, offer a unique perspective on the evolution of revenge stories in Hong Kong cinema. Blu-ray editions of both films will be released for the first time anywhere in the world, with the UK release scheduled for 16 June 2025 and the North American debut on 17 June 2025. Each edition is strictly limited to 2000 copies and comes in an exclusive O-card slipcase complete with a collector’s booklet.

Chow Yun-fat shines in a gripping war drama

Adding to the impressive line-up is Hong Kong 1941, a powerful war drama directed by versatile British-Chinese filmmaker Po-Chih Leong. Known for his extensive career spanning nearly fifty years and diverse cinematic ventures—from action flicks like Foxbat to the gangster drama Shanghai 1920—Leong’s masterpiece marks a turning point in Hong Kong’s film history. Starring Cecilia Yip, Alex Man, and a breakout performance from Chow Yun-fat, the film tells a poignant story of loyalty and love set against one of Hong Kong’s darkest historical periods. Garnering eight nominations at the 1985 Hong Kong Film Awards, including a win for breathtaking cinematography by Brian Lai, Hong Kong 1941propelled Chow Yun-fat to stardom even before his celebrated collaboration with John Woo in A Better Tomorrow. The Masters of Cinema series will unveil this cinematic treasure on Blu-ray for the first time outside Asia, with releases scheduled for 16 June 2025 in the UK and 17 June 2025 in North America. As with the other titles, this edition is limited to 2000 copies and features an exclusive O-card slipcase and collector’s booklet.

Eureka!’s June 2025 release schedule not only celebrates classic cinema but also promises to offer fans an unparalleled collection of meticulously restored and thoughtfully curated editions. With such diverse and high-calibre offerings, collectors and movie enthusiasts alike have much to look forward to this summer.
